Uh, actually, architects do have to work like this. And have since the days of Imhotep. Add the fact that people are willing to pay more for their refigerator than they are for the plans and you've got custom home design down to a 'T'. It should be noted that most custom homes end in divorce thanks to the process as detailed above.
